Moving Boxes Estimate Calculator
A typical room needs around 10–15 boxes. Multiply by your room count and add spares for the things you forgot.
This result is an estimate of how many boxes to buy, with the higher figure including spare boxes for items that do not fit the first count.
Formula
Boxes = rooms x boxes per room, plus 10% spares.
How it works
Kitchens and book-filled rooms need far more boxes than bedrooms, so adjust the per-room figure up if you have lots of books or kitchenware.
Pack heavy things in small boxes and light things in large ones — a big box of books is nobody's friend on moving day.
Worked example
For example, 3 rooms at 12 boxes per room give 36 boxes, and adding 10% spares gives about 40 boxes to buy.
FAQs
How many boxes does a kitchen need?
Often 15–20, since kitchenware is small, numerous and fragile.
Should I buy all boxes at once?
Buy the estimate plus spares in one go — running out mid-pack is the classic moving-day delay.
What sizes should I get?
A mix: small for heavy items, medium for most things, large only for light bulky items like bedding.
