Chore Time Split Calculator
Divide the week's total chore time by the number of people to see each person's fair share.
This result is each person’s equal share of the weekly chore time, so every person in the household does the same number of minutes.
Formula
Each share = total chore time / number of people.
How it works
Time is the fairest way to split chores, because tasks differ in effort: thirty minutes of scrubbing is not the same as thirty minutes of tidying, but time keeps it simple.
Rotating tasks weekly stops one person always getting the worst job — fairness over time matters more than a perfect single week.
Worked example
For example, 120 minutes shared between 3 people gives 120 ÷ 3 = 40 minutes per person per week, which is 40 ÷ 60 = 0.67 hours.
FAQs
Is time really the fairest split?
It is the simplest fair measure. Splitting by task count alone ignores that some chores take much longer.
What if someone works longer hours?
Households often adjust shares then — the split can be weighted, but it should be agreed openly.
How do I estimate total chore time?
Time each regular chore for a week, then add them up. Most households are surprised by the total.
