Formula

Difference = end time minus start time, in minutes, converted back to hours and minutes. If the end time is earlier, it is treated as the next day.

How it works

Pick a start and end time. The calculator converts both to minutes since midnight, subtracts, and reports hours and minutes. An end time earlier than the start is read as overnight, not as a negative duration.

Worked example

For example, from 09:00 to 17:30 the difference is 510 minutes, which is 8 hours 30 minutes.

FAQs

What if the end time is earlier than the start?
It is treated as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, not −16 hours.

Does it handle seconds?
No. This calculator works to the minute, which suits shifts, travel, and schedules.

Can the difference exceed 24 hours?
No. With times only and no dates, the maximum reported difference is under 24 hours.
