Sleep Debt (Rough) Calculator
Add up the shortfall when nightly sleep falls below what you need, over several nights.
The result is the total hours of sleep missed over the nights entered, based on the nightly shortfall.
Formula
Sleep debt equals nightly shortfall (needed minus actual) multiplied by the number of nights.
How it works
The nightly gap is multiplied by the number of nights to give a cumulative shortfall. It is a rough bookkeeping figure, not a medical measure, and one long lie-in does not neatly repay it.
Worked example
For example, needing 8 hours, actually sleeping 6.5 hours, over 5 nights gives (8 − 6.5) × 5 = 1.5 × 5 = 7.5 hours of rough sleep debt.
FAQs
Can I repay sleep debt in one weekend?
Only partly. Regular sleep beats occasional catch-up.
Is sleep debt real?
The feeling of accumulated tiredness is real, but this simple total is only an approximation.
What if I sleep more than needed?
Extra sleep is counted as zero debt here, not as credit.
