Time & Date
Shift Length Calculator
Find the length of a work shift, including an unpaid break, with overnight shifts handled.
This result shows the full shift length first and then the working time left after the unpaid break is subtracted.
Formula
Gross shift = end minus start, wrapping past midnight for overnight shifts. Net shift = gross shift minus break minutes.
How it works
Pick the shift start and end times and enter the unpaid break in minutes. The calculator reports both gross and net length, with overnight shifts treated as ending the next day.
Worked example
For example, a shift from 09:00 to 17:00 lasts 8.00 hours gross, and subtracting a 30-minute break leaves 7.50 hours net, which is 7h 30m.
FAQs
What if the shift runs overnight?
An end time earlier than the start is read as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
Is the break paid or unpaid here?
Unpaid: it is subtracted from the gross length to give net working time.
Can the break exceed the shift?
The net result is floored at zero, so an impossible break gives 0 net hours rather than a negative shift.
