Max Heart Rate Calculator
Estimate maximum heart rate two ways: the classic 220 minus age and the Tanaka formula.
The two results are estimates of the highest heart rate in beats per minute, so use them as a general guide for exercise intensity rather than a personal limit.
Formula
Classic maximum is 220 minus age; Tanaka maximum is 208 minus 0.7 times age.
How it works
Both formulas use age only, so they agree closely for young adults and diverge slightly with age. Tanaka tends to fit older adults a little better in studies, but neither knows your fitness or genetics.
Worked example
For example, at age 30, the classic maximum is 220 - 30 = 190 bpm and the Tanaka maximum is 208 - 0.7 × 30 = 187 bpm.
FAQs
Which formula should I use?
Either is fine as a guide; Tanaka is often preferred for older adults.
Can I exceed my estimated max?
Yes. Estimates are averages, and fit people often exceed them.
Should I train to my max?
No. Most training sits well below maximum.
