Ideal Weight (Devine Estimate) Calculator

Estimate a reference weight with the Devine formula, shown as a range because one number is misleading.

—

This result gives a rough reference range for the height and sex entered, so a value inside the range is consistent with the estimate rather than a single exact target.

Formula

Devine: 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 5 feet, plus 2.3 kg for each inch above 5 feet.

How it works

Height is converted to inches, the amount above 5 feet is multiplied by 2.3 kg, and added to the base figure. The page shows a ±10% band around it, because frame, muscle and age make any single ideal weight crude.

Worked example

For example, a man 175 cm tall is about 68.90 inches, which is about 8.90 inches above 5 feet, so the estimate is 50 + (2.3 × 8.90) = about 70.5 kg, with a rough range of about 63.4 kg to 77.5 kg.

FAQs

Should I aim for this exact weight?
No. It is an old reference formula, not a personal prescription.

Why a range?
Because healthy weights vary widely at the same height.

What if I am below 5 feet?
The formula still runs, but it is less meaningful far from average height.
