Time & Date
Hours Between Times Calculator
Get the elapsed time between two clock times as a decimal number of hours.
This result is the total time between the two times, shown both as decimal hours and as minutes, so it can be used directly for payroll or billing.
Formula
Decimal hours = total minutes between the two times divided by 60. Overnight spans wrap past midnight.
How it works
Pick the two times. The calculator reports elapsed time both in minutes and as decimal hours, the form payroll and billing systems usually need — 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.50 hours.
FAQs
Why decimal hours instead of hours and minutes?
Payroll and invoicing usually multiply a rate by decimal hours, so 7.50 hours is easier to bill than 7 hours 30 minutes.
Is 7 hours 30 minutes really 7.50 hours?
Yes. 30 minutes is half an hour, so 7 + 0.50 = 7.50 hours.
What about overnight shifts?
An end time earlier than the start is read as the next day.
