Cycling Speed and Time Calculator
Convert between cycling distance, time and average speed in one step.
The average speed result tells you how fast you covered the distance overall, including any slower sections, rather than your top speed.
Formula
Average speed equals distance divided by time in hours.
How it works
Distance divided by time gives the average, including any slower sections. It says nothing about top speed or effort on hills.
Worked example
For example, 20 km in 60 minutes gives an average speed of 20.0 km/h, because 60 minutes equals 1 hour and 20 divided by 1 equals 20.0.
FAQs
Why is my average lower than my cruising speed?
Stops, junctions and hills all drag the average down.
Does wind matter?
A lot. Headwinds cost more time than tailwinds save.
Can I use miles?
Convert miles to kilometres first (1 mile = 1.609 km).
