BMR Calculator
Estimate basal metabolic rate, the energy used at rest, with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.
The result is the estimated energy used at rest in a full day, so it covers lying still all day only and does not include activity, digestion or exercise on top.
Formula
Mifflin-St Jeor: men, 10×weight + 6.25×height − 5×age + 5; women, the same with −161 instead of +5.
How it works
Weight, height, age and sex are combined in the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. The result is what the body would use lying still all day, before any activity, digestion or exercise is added.
Worked example
For example, a man weighing 70 kg, 175 cm tall and aged 30 years gives 700 plus 1093.75 minus 150 plus 5, which equals 1649 kcal per day at rest.
FAQs
Is BMR the same as daily calorie needs?
No. BMR is rest only; total needs add activity on top.
Why does age lower it?
The equation subtracts a little for each year of age.
Does muscle change it?
Yes in real life, but this equation uses weight only, so it is approximate.
