Wedding Retirement Corpus Calculator (20 Years)

Estimate a retirement corpus from monthly savings. This wedding version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Future value result shows the total retirement fund your regular monthly savings could build up over 20 years at the rate you entered, combining every monthly payment with the growth earned on those payments.

Formula

Corpus uses the monthly rate and number of monthly savings to grow each saving with interest.

How it works

Starting earlier matters more than saving a little more later, because interest has longer to compound.

Worked example

Monthly saving $500, annual rate 7 percent, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 7 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5833 percent a month, and the number of savings is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, divided by the monthly rate, which gives $260,463.33. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The couple pays in $120,000 in total, so $140,463.33 of the corpus is interest. That is the same monthly saving and rate as on every page in this group; only the time input changes, and that alone produces the different corpus figures across the years.

Who this term suits for a wedding: a couple or parents planning a wedding two decades ahead, where the fund has long enough to compound that interest starts to do as much work as the savings themselves.

FAQs

When should I start saving for retirement?
As early as possible. Time in the market allows compounding to do more of the work.

Is this wedding calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest pass $100,000 over 20 years?
Because 240 savings of $500 compound for up to 20 years. Interest reaches $140,463.33, which is more than the $120,000 paid in. At 15 years interest is still short of the amount paid in, at $68,481.15 against $90,000.

Does a 20-year wedding plan survive changing wedding styles?
The fund itself does not depend on wedding styles, but the wedding budget does. A couple planning 20 years ahead should treat the corpus as a general married-life fund, not as a fixed wedding price.

Is 7 percent a safe return to assume for 20 years?
No single rate is safe for 20 years. The 7 percent is only the entered assumption. If the real average return is lower, the same $500 a month will fall short of $260,463.33.
