Wedding Loan Total Interest Calculator (5 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This wedding version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, Total interest is the extra cost of borrowing beyond the amount borrowed, and Total paid is the loan plus that interest, so the two figures together show the full amount repaid over the loan term.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is about 0.5417% a month, and the number of payments is 5 times 12, which is 60. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $3,913.23. Over 60 payments the total paid is $234,793.78, so the total interest is $234,793.78 minus $200,000, which is $34,793.78. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults, and it is the cheapest total interest in this group because the loan is cleared fastest.
Who this term suits for a wedding: A couple paying for a wedding outright from savings plus a short loan, such as a venue, catering and photography bill that must be cleared before the first anniversary, where a high monthly payment is acceptable for five years to keep interest down.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this wedding calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is $34,793.78 a lot of interest for a 5-year wedding loan?
It is about 17.4% of the $200,000 borrowed, which is the price of clearing the loan in only 60 payments. A shorter term always costs less interest in total, but the $3,913.23 monthly payment is the highest in this group, so it only works if the household budget can carry it.
What if the wedding loan were only $100,000 instead of $200,000?
Because the EMI formula scales with the amount borrowed, halving the loan halves every figure at the same rate and term: the payment would be about $1,956.62 a month, the total paid about $117,396.89, and the total interest about $17,396.89. Borrowing less is the simplest way to cut wedding-loan interest.
Should a wedding loan be stretched longer just to lower the monthly payment?
Only with eyes open: this page shows that a longer term lowers each payment but raises total interest a lot. Over 10 years the same loan costs $72,515.15 in interest, more than double the 5-year figure, so a lower payment is bought with much more interest.
