Wedding Loan Total Interest Calculator (20 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This wedding version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Total interest is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the original loan amount over 20 years, and the Total paid is the loan amount plus that interest, meaning the full amount handed over by the final payment.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is about 0.5417% a month, and the number of payments is 20 times 12, which is 240. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $1,491.15. Over 240 payments the total paid is $357,875.11, so the total interest is $357,875.11 minus $200,000, which is $157,875.11. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults.
Who this term suits for a wedding: A couple whose wedding loan became part of a twenty-year household plan, such as a wedding followed by children and a home, where $1,491.15 a month is affordable but the loan outlives the wedding by many years.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this wedding calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does the interest reach $157,875.11 over 20 years?
Because interest is charged for 240 months: the total paid is $357,875.11 on a $200,000 loan, so interest alone is nearly 79% of the amount borrowed. The $1,491.15 payment looks gentle, but twenty years of interest is expensive.
What if the wedding loan were only $100,000 instead of $200,000?
Halving the loan halves every figure at the same rate and term: the payment would be about $745.58 a month, the total paid about $178,937.56, and the total interest about $78,937.56.
Is a 20-year wedding loan sensible?
Rarely for wedding costs alone: twenty years is a mortgage-length commitment for a celebration. If the loan also bought lasting assets, the term may make sense, but a couple should compare the $157,875.11 interest against what a shorter term would cost before signing.
