Wedding Loan Total Interest Calculator (10 Years)

Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This wedding version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Total interest is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the original loan amount over 10 years, and the Total paid is the loan amount plus that interest, meaning the full amount handed over by the final payment.

Formula

Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.

How it works

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

Worked example

Loan $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is about 0.5417% a month, and the number of payments is 10 times 12, which is 120. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $2,270.96. Over 120 payments the total paid is $272,515.15, so the total interest is $272,515.15 minus $200,000, which is $72,515.15. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults.

Who this term suits for a wedding: A couple spreading wedding costs over a decade, such as a large wedding plus a honeymoon and the first years of married life, where $2,270.96 a month is manageable but the loan is still gone well before a mortgage-length commitment.

FAQs

Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.

Is this wedding calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does the 10-year interest more than double the 5-year figure?
Because interest is charged for twice as many months: 120 payments instead of 60. The payment falls from $3,913.23 to $2,270.96, but the total interest rises from $34,793.78 to $72,515.15, which is the trade-off of a longer term.

What if the wedding loan were only $100,000 instead of $200,000?
Halving the loan halves every figure at the same rate and term: the payment would be about $1,135.48 a month, the total paid about $136,257.58, and the total interest about $36,257.58. A smaller wedding budget is the simplest way to cut interest.

Is 10 years too long to repay a wedding loan?
It depends on the household: ten years is long for a one-day event, and $72,515.15 of interest is a large extra cost. If the same $200,000 can be cleared sooner, the interest falls sharply, so a couple should check whether a shorter term fits before choosing ten years.
