Wedding Future Value Monthly Savings Calculator (20 Years)

Estimate the future value of regular monthly savings. This wedding version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

This Future value is the total your regular monthly deposits grow to by the end of the term you entered, including the interest earned along the way, so it is larger than the total you paid in whenever the interest rate is above zero.

Formula

Future value uses the monthly rate and the number of monthly deposits to grow each deposit with interest.

How it works

Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made until the end of the term.

Worked example

Monthly deposit $500, annual rate 6 percent, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 6 percent divided by 12, which is 0.5 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus 0.005 to the power of 240, minus one, divided by 0.005, which gives $231,020.45. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The couple pays in $120,000 in total, so $111,020.45 of the future value is interest. Without any interest, reaching the same $231,020.45 would need $962.59 a month for 240 months.

Who this term suits for a wedding: a long-horizon wedding fund, such as parents saving from a child's early years, or a couple planning a wedding and a home together over two decades.

FAQs

How does monthly saving grow?
Regular deposits grow because each deposit earns interest, and that interest then earns more interest.

Is this wedding calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest pass $100,000 over 20 years?
Because compounding feeds on itself: the $120,000 of deposits grows to $231,020.45, and $111,020.45 of that is interest. By year 20 the fund earns roughly $962.59 a month in growth on average, nearly double the $500 deposit.

Does a 20-year wedding plan survive changing wedding styles?
The money survives, but the plan may not: a wedding imagined 20 years ahead will look very different when the day arrives. The fund is flexible only if it is kept in an account that can be used for whatever the celebration becomes.

Is 6 percent a safe return to assume for 20 years?
It is an assumption, not a guarantee. Over 20 years markets go through good and bad periods, and fees and taxes are not counted here. A lower average return would leave the fund well short of $231,020.45.
