Travel Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (30 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This travel version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit is the fixed amount to set aside every month for 360 months over 30 years to reach the goal amount at the entered rate, so it is a monthly budget figure, not the total amount saved.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount 50,000 dollars, annual rate 5 percent, term 30 years. The monthly rate is 5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.4167 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 30 times 12, which is 360 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is 50,000 dollars times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 360, minus one, which gives 60.08 dollars a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the full term the traveller deposits 21,627.89 dollars in total, so 28,372.11 dollars of the 50,000 dollar goal comes from interest. Without any interest, the same goal would need 138.89 dollars a month, so the assumed 5 percent return saves 78.81 dollars a month.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller with a very long horizon, such as a young saver building a retirement travel fund, or someone planning a home abroad to be bought in about 30 years.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does the 30-year deposit fall to 60.08 dollars a month?
Because 360 months of compounding do most of the work: interest adds 28,372.11 dollars, more than the traveller's own deposits of 21,627.89 dollars. The monthly figure looks small, but it only works if the deposits really continue for all 30 years.
Can a 50,000 dollar goal still fund a big trip in 30 years?
Probably not the same trip. Thirty years of rising travel prices mean 50,000 dollars will buy less than it does today, so a traveller should expect to raise the goal over time rather than treating 50,000 dollars as a fixed target.
What should a traveller do if the money is needed early?
Use the fund for the earlier trip, but understand the trade-off: taking money out early removes the deposits that would have compounded longest, so the remaining fund will grow much more slowly afterwards.
