Travel Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This travel version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit is the amount to save every month for 180 monthly deposits over 15 years to reach the goal amount, assuming the stated annual rate stays the same.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount 50,000 dollars, annual rate 5 percent, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.4167 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is 50,000 dollars times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives 187.06 dollars a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the full term the traveller deposits 33,671.43 dollars in total, so 16,328.57 dollars of the 50,000 dollar goal comes from interest. Without any interest, the same goal would need 277.78 dollars a month, so the assumed 5 percent return saves 90.71 dollars a month.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller planning well ahead, such as a young worker saving for a long career break, a round-the-world trip after the children leave home, or a retirement travel fund starting in about 15 years.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is the 15-year deposit only 187.06 dollars a month?
Because time does most of the work. Over 180 months, interest adds 16,328.57 dollars, nearly a third of the goal, so the traveller's own deposits only need to reach 33,671.43 dollars. That is why starting 15 years early cuts the monthly figure to less than a quarter of the 5-year deposit.
Is a 15-year travel savings plan too long to trust?
It is long enough that the goal and the rate must be reviewed, but not too long to start. A traveller should check the fund every year or two, raise the deposit when income rises, and remember that the 5 percent rate is only an assumption, not a promise.
What happens if deposits pause when travel is postponed?
A pause does not destroy the plan, but it does cost compounding time. Missing deposits early hurts more than missing them late, because early money has the longest time to grow, so a traveller who pauses should try to catch up with a slightly higher deposit afterwards.
