Travel Return on Investment Calculator (5 Years)

Calculate return on investment as a percentage. This travel version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Return is the total percentage gain over the whole period: a positive percentage means the final value is higher than the amount invested, while a negative percentage means it is lower.

Formula

Return equals final value minus invested amount, divided by invested amount, times 100.

How it works

A positive return means the final value is higher than the amount invested.

Worked example

A travel fund starts with $10,000 invested and ends with a final value of $15,000. Return equals final value minus invested amount, divided by invested amount, times 100, so the return is ($15,000 - $10,000) / $10,000 x 100 = 50.00%. Spread over the 5-year planning term, that total return equals about 8.45% a year.

Travel use case: A traveller saving for a first big overseas trip in five years puts $10,000 into a travel fund and watches it grow to $15,000 before booking flights and hotels.

FAQs

What is a good ROI?
There is no single good figure. Compare returns over the same period and with the same risk before deciding.

Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Does a 50% return over 5 years beat saving cash for a trip?
Yes, if the fund actually earns it. Cash saved at home stays at $10,000, while a fund that grows to $15,000 adds $5,000 toward flights, hotels, and spending money.

Should I count flights and hotels when I plan a 5-year trip fund?
Yes. Set the trip budget first, including flights, hotels, food, and insurance, then work out how much the fund must reach before you book.

Is 5 years long enough to invest a travel fund?
It can be, but five years is short for risky investments. A steadier fund suits a trip you definitely plan to take, since a sharp fall close to departure is hard to recover from.
