Travel Retirement Corpus Calculator (5 Years)

Estimate a retirement corpus from monthly savings. This travel version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Future value is the total amount your monthly savings grow to over 5 years, including the interest earned on top of the money you paid in.

Formula

Corpus uses the monthly rate and number of monthly savings to grow each saving with interest.

How it works

Starting earlier matters more than saving a little more later, because interest has longer to compound.

Worked example

Monthly saving $500, annual rate 7 percent, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 7 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5833 percent a month, and the number of savings is 5 times 12, which is 60 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 60, minus one, divided by the monthly rate, which gives $35,796.45. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The traveller pays in $30,000 in total, so $5,796.45 of the corpus is interest.

Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller only a few years from stepping back, who needs a short, visible top-up fund — for example a planned round-the-world trip, a sabbatical year, or a campervan for retirement travel — where 5 years of saving is a bridge, not a whole retirement plan.

FAQs

When should I start saving for retirement?
As early as possible. Time in the market allows compounding to do more of the work.

Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $500 a month for 5 years enough to retire and travel?
Not on its own. $35,796.45 is a useful top-up for a planned trip, a sabbatical, or a campervan, but it is not a full retirement travel fund. Five years is a bridge, not a whole plan.

Why is the interest only $5,796.45 over 5 years?
Because compounding needs time. Over only 60 months at 7 percent, most of the $35,796.45 is the traveller's own $30,000 of savings, and only $5,796.45 is interest.

What if travel plans change and a saving is missed?
A missed month lowers the final figure, because that month's saving misses all of its future compounding. The plan still works, but the corpus ends up smaller than $35,796.45.
