Travel Present Value Calculator (10 Years)
Find how much a future amount is worth today. This travel version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
In plain terms, the Present value is what a future amount is worth today after discounting it at the annual rate over the time entered, so a higher rate or a longer time gives a lower present value.
Formula
Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.
How it works
A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.
Worked example
Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5 percent, term 10 years. Using the page formula, present value equals $50,000 divided by 1.05 to the power of 10, which is $30,695.66. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults. The discount for waiting is $50,000 minus $30,695.66, which is $19,304.34.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller building a decade-away travel fund, such as a milestone anniversary journey, a long-planned expedition, or a retirement trip fund started ten years out.
FAQs
What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does a $50,000 travel sum lose almost $20,000 of value over 10 years?
Because discounting compounds. $50,000 divided by 1.05 to the power of 10 is $30,695.66, a discount of $19,304.34, nearly double the 5-year discount of $10,823.69.
Is $30,695.66 a fair price to accept today instead of $50,000 in 10 years?
At a 5 percent discount rate, yes, the two are equal in today's money. If you could earn more than 5 percent elsewhere, $30,695.66 today is worth more than $50,000 in 10 years.
What if the discount rate is only 3 percent over 10 years?
Then the present value is higher: $50,000 divided by 1.03 to the power of 10 is $37,204.70, because a lower rate discounts the future less heavily.
