Travel Loan EMI Calculator (30 Years)

Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This travel version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.

—

In plain terms, the Monthly payment is the fixed amount you pay every month for 30 years, and the Total paid is everything you will have handed over by the final payment, including both the loan itself and the interest charged on it.

Formula

EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.

How it works

This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.

Worked example

Loan amount 200,000 dollars, annual rate 6.5 percent, term 30 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 30 times 12, which is 360 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is 1,264.14 dollars. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the full term the total paid is 455,088.98 dollars, so the total interest is 455,088.98 dollars minus 200,000 dollars, which is 255,088.98 dollars.

Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller buying a holiday property as a lifetime base, where the monthly payment must stay low enough to survive retirement or a fall in travel income.

FAQs

What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.

Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is a 1,264.14 dollar EMI worth it if total interest is 255,088.98 dollars?
Only if the property earns or is enjoyed for the full 30 years. The payment is just 86.28 dollars a month lower than the 25-year EMI of 1,350.41 dollars, yet the extra 5 years add 49,964.68 dollars of interest, so the small monthly saving is very expensive.

Why does the EMI fall so little between 25 and 30 years?
Because most of the payment is already interest, and stretching the term further only spreads the same interest more thinly. Going from 300 to 360 payments cuts the EMI by only 86.28 dollars a month while adding 49,964.68 dollars of interest in total.

Should a traveller borrow for 30 years at all?
For a trip or a vehicle, no. For a holiday property that will be used and rented for 30 years, possibly, but the traveller should compare it with a 25-year loan first: the monthly saving is small and the extra interest is large.
