Travel Future Value Monthly Savings Calculator (20 Years)

Estimate the future value of regular monthly savings. This travel version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

This future value is the total amount your regular monthly deposits would grow to by the end of the term, including the interest earned along the way.

Formula

Future value uses the monthly rate and the number of monthly deposits to grow each deposit with interest.

How it works

Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made until the end of the term.

Worked example

Monthly deposit $500, annual rate 6 percent, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 6 percent divided by 12, which is 0.5 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus 0.005 to the power of 240, minus one, divided by 0.005, which gives $231,020.45. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The traveller pays in $120,000 in total, so $111,020.45 of the future value is interest. Without any interest, reaching the same $231,020.45 would need $962.59 a month for 240 months.

Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller with a long horizon, such as a retirement travel fund, a second home abroad, or a lifetime travel goal planned over about 20 years.

FAQs

How does monthly saving grow?
Regular deposits grow because each deposit earns interest, and that interest then earns more interest.

Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest pass $100,000 over 20 years?
Because 240 deposits compound for up to 20 years. After about 20 years the interest earned starts to rival the money paid in, which is why long terms grow so fast.

Does a 20-year travel plan survive changing destinations and travel styles?
Only if it is reviewed. A fund built for one kind of trip may not fit another, so revisit the goal, the deposit and the assumed rate every few years.

Is 6 percent a safe return to assume for 20 years?
No single rate is safe for 20 years. Treat 6 percent as a planning assumption, not a promise, and check what the fund becomes at a lower rate too.
