Travel Future Value Monthly Savings Calculator (15 Years)
Estimate the future value of regular monthly savings. This travel version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.
This future value is the total amount your regular monthly deposits would grow to by the end of the term, including the interest earned along the way.
Formula
Future value uses the monthly rate and the number of monthly deposits to grow each deposit with interest.
How it works
Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made until the end of the term.
Worked example
Monthly deposit $500, annual rate 6 percent, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 6 percent divided by 12, which is 0.5 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus 0.005 to the power of 180, minus one, divided by 0.005, which gives $145,409.36. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The traveller pays in $90,000 in total, so $55,409.36 of the future value is interest. Without any interest, reaching the same $145,409.36 would need $807.83 a month for 180 months.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller planning well ahead, such as saving for a retirement travel fund, a long-postponed world trip, or a holiday base to enjoy in about 15 years.
FAQs
How does monthly saving grow?
Regular deposits grow because each deposit earns interest, and that interest then earns more interest.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How can interest be $55,409.36 on $90,000 of deposits?
Because 180 deposits compound for up to 15 years. The earliest $500 deposits earn interest for the full 15 years, and their interest earns interest too.
Is a 15-year travel savings plan too long to trust?
It is long enough that trip prices, destinations and personal plans will change. Review the goal every few years and adjust the deposit rather than following the first plan unchanged.
What if the traveller pauses deposits when travel is postponed?
Pausing stops new money going in, but the money already saved keeps earning interest. The final value falls, but by less than the paused deposits alone, because past interest keeps compounding.
