Travel Future Value Monthly Savings Calculator (10 Years)
Estimate the future value of regular monthly savings. This travel version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
This future value is the total amount your regular monthly deposits would grow to by the end of the term, including the interest earned along the way.
Formula
Future value uses the monthly rate and the number of monthly deposits to grow each deposit with interest.
How it works
Each monthly deposit earns interest from the month it is made until the end of the term.
Worked example
Monthly deposit $500, annual rate 6 percent, term 10 years. The monthly rate is 6 percent divided by 12, which is 0.5 percent a month, and the number of deposits is 10 times 12, which is 120 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus 0.005 to the power of 120, minus one, divided by 0.005, which gives $81,939.67. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The traveller pays in $60,000 in total, so $21,939.67 of the future value is interest. Without any interest, reaching the same $81,939.67 would need $682.83 a month for 120 months.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller funding a bigger, slower goal, such as a decade of annual long trips, a future gap year with family, or a campervan and travel base that must be paid for in about 10 years.
FAQs
How does monthly saving grow?
Regular deposits grow because each deposit earns interest, and that interest then earns more interest.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is the 10-year interest $21,939.67, more than four times the 5-year interest?
Because each deposit earns interest for longer, and that interest earns more interest. Doubling the term more than doubles the interest.
Should a traveller count on 6 percent every year for 10 years?
No. Six percent is only the entered assumption. Real returns vary, and a lower average return would leave the same $500 deposit short of $81,939.67.
What happens if the traveller raises the deposit as income grows?
Every extra dollar deposited early earns interest for the remaining years, so raising the deposit even slightly can lift the final value well above $81,939.67.
