Travel Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (10 Years)
Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This travel version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly interest result is the interest charged in one month on the entered balance at the entered annual rate, so paying only this amount leaves the balance unchanged, while paying more than this amount reduces the balance.
Formula
Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.
How it works
Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.
Worked example
Balance $5,000, annual rate 18 percent, term 10 years. Using the page formula, the monthly interest is $5,000 times 18 divided by 100 divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults, and it is the same on every page in this group because the term is not an input: only the balance and the rate decide the answer. Paying only $75.00 a month leaves the $5,000 balance unchanged, so over 10 years (120 months) of interest-only payments the total interest paid would be $9,000, and the $5,000 would still be owed at the end. That total is an illustration only, not a second output of this page.
Who this term suits for a traveller: a traveller paying off a campervan or a long round-the-world trip over a decade, where the card is a bridge to be cleared while the vehicle or the memories still last.
FAQs
Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.
Is this travel calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does $75 a month look small but cost $9,000 over 10 years?
Because $75.00 times 120 months is $9,000, and if only interest is paid, the $5,000 balance is still owed at the end of the 10 years.
Is 10 years too long to carry a travel card balance?
Yes, for most travellers. Ten years of card interest costs nearly twice the balance, while a cheaper travel loan or a fixed repayment plan would cost far less.
What happens if the rate rises above 18 percent during 10 years?
The monthly interest rises with it. At 24 percent, the same $5,000 balance would cost $100.00 a month in interest, and the 10-year total would rise to $12,000.
