Straight-Line Depreciation Calculator
Spread an asset's cost evenly over its useful life.
The result shows the annual depreciation and the monthly figure, so the same amount is charged each year across the useful life of the asset.
Formula
Annual depreciation equals cost minus salvage value, divided by useful life.
How it works
Straight-line is the simplest method: the same charge every year. It suits assets that lose value steadily, unlike cars or tech that lose value faster early on.
Worked example
For example, a purchase cost of $20000 with a salvage value of $2000 over 9 years gives annual depreciation of $2000.00, since ($20000 − $2000) ÷ 9 = $2000.00, or $166.67 per month.
