Startup Present Value Calculator (10 Years)
Find how much a future amount is worth today. This startup version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.
The Present value is what a future amount is worth in today’s money, so a figure well below the future amount shows how much value waiting 10 years removes.
Formula
Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.
How it works
A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.
Worked example
Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5 percent, term 10 years. Using the page formula, present value equals $50,000 divided by 1.05 to the power of 10, which is $30,695.66. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults. The discount for waiting is $50,000 minus $30,695.66, which is $19,304.34.
Who this term suits for a startup founder: a founder comparing a smaller payment now with a larger one a decade away, such as a licensing payout, a second funding milestone, or a deferred sale tranche due in about 10 years.
FAQs
What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.
Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does a $50,000 startup payment lose almost $20,000 of value over 10 years?
Because 1.05 to the power of 10 is about 1.629, so $50,000 divided by 1.629 is $30,695.66. Ten years of compounding at 5 percent removes $19,304.34 of today's value.
Is $30,695.66 a fair price to accept today instead of $50,000 in 10 years?
At a 5 percent return it is exactly fair: investing $30,695.66 at 5 percent for 10 years grows back to $50,000. If your startup can earn more than 5 percent, take the money sooner.
What if the discount rate is only 3 percent over 10 years?
Then the same $50,000 is worth $37,204.70 today, because 1.03 to the power of 10 is only about 1.344. A lower rate means waiting costs less.
