Startup Loan Total Interest Calculator (5 Years)

Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This startup version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Total paid is everything repaid over the loan in total, and the Total interest is the extra cost above the amount borrowed, so a lower Total interest means a cheaper loan overall.

Formula

Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.

How it works

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5 percent, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 5 times 12, which is 60 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is $200,000 times the monthly rate times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 60, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 60 minus one, which gives $3,913.23 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.

Over the full term, 60 payments of $3,913.23 give total paid of $234,793.78. Total interest is total paid minus the principal, so $234,793.78 minus $200,000 gives $34,793.78 of interest. This headline is the same calculation on every page in this group, because the loan amount and rate are identical; only the term changes, and a longer term lowers the monthly payment while raising total interest.

A startup in its first growth push: for example a new software or food business borrowing to fit out its first office, buy equipment, or fund a first product launch, where the loan must be cleared from early revenue before the next funding round.

FAQs

Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.

Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Can a new startup afford $3,913.23 a month for 5 years?
Only if early revenue reliably covers it: $3,913.23 a month is $46,958.76 a year, so the startup needs steady sales above that plus rent, wages, and stock costs before this loan is affordable.

Why is 5-year total interest only $34,793.78?
Because the loan is cleared quickly: 60 payments of $3,913.23 give $234,793.78 in total, and $234,793.78 minus the $200,000 borrowed leaves $34,793.78 of interest.

What if the startup repays the loan early?
Early repayment cuts the remaining interest, because fewer monthly payments are made. The exact saving depends on the lender's early-repayment terms, which this page does not include.
