Startup Loan Total Interest Calculator (25 Years)

Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This startup version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Total interest is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the amount borrowed over 25 years, and the Total paid is the amount borrowed plus that interest by the end of the loan.

Formula

Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.

How it works

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5 percent, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 25 times 12, which is 300 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is $200,000 times the monthly rate times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 300, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 300 minus one, which gives $1,350.41 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.

Over the full term, 300 payments of $1,350.41 give total paid of $405,124.30. Total interest is total paid minus the principal, so $405,124.30 minus $200,000 gives $205,124.30 of interest. This headline is the same calculation on every page in this group, because the loan amount and rate are identical; only the term changes, and a longer term lowers the monthly payment while raising total interest.

A startup founder planning around a whole career stage: for example a family-run startup buying freehold premises or heavy equipment, where the loan will still be running when the next generation of the business takes over.

FAQs

Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.

Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does 25-year interest pass the amount borrowed?
Because 300 payments of $1,350.41 total $405,124.30, and $405,124.30 minus $200,000 leaves $205,124.30 of interest, which is $5,124.30 more than the $200,000 loan itself.

Is a 25-year startup loan ever sensible?
Only for something that lasts 25 years, such as freehold premises: borrowing for 25 years to buy stock, vehicles, or short-life equipment means paying long after the purchase is gone.

How should a startup review a 25-year loan?
At least once a year: check whether revenue still covers $1,350.41 a month, whether refinancing at a lower rate is possible, and whether extra payments could cut the interest.
