Startup Loan Total Interest Calculator (15 Years)
Estimate total interest paid over a loan. This startup version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.
The Total interest is the extra cost of borrowing on top of the amount borrowed over 15 years, and the Total paid is the amount borrowed plus that interest by the end of the loan.
Formula
Total interest equals monthly EMI times number of payments minus the principal.
How it works
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5 percent, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is $200,000 times the monthly rate times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180 minus one, which gives $1,742.21 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults.
Over the full term, 180 payments of $1,742.21 give total paid of $313,598.65. Total interest is total paid minus the principal, so $313,598.65 minus $200,000 gives $113,598.65 of interest. This headline is the same calculation on every page in this group, because the loan amount and rate are identical; only the term changes, and a longer term lowers the monthly payment while raising total interest.
A startup building for the medium term: for example a business buying its own workshop, studio, or retail unit, or investing in machinery that will serve it for well over a decade.
FAQs
Why does a longer loan cost more interest?
More payments mean interest is charged for longer, so total interest rises even if each payment is smaller.
Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How does 15-year interest reach $113,598.65?
Through 180 payments of $1,742.21, which total $313,598.65; minus the $200,000 borrowed, that leaves $113,598.65 of interest, more than half the loan itself.
Is a 15-year loan too long for startup equipment?
Often yes: most equipment wears out or becomes outdated well before 15 years, so a startup should match the loan term to how long the thing being bought will actually last.
What if the startup borrows $400,000 instead of $200,000?
At the same rate and term, every figure doubles: the payment becomes about $3,484.42 a month and total interest about $227,197.30, because the EMI formula scales directly with the amount borrowed.
