Startup Loan EMI Calculator (5 Years)

Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This startup version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly payment is the fixed amount you pay every month for 5 years, and the Total paid is everything you will have paid by the end of the loan, including both the amount borrowed and the interest.

Formula

EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.

How it works

This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.

Worked example

Loan amount 200,000 dollars, annual interest rate 6.5 percent, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 5 times 12, which is 60 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is 3,913.23 dollars. That is the calculator output for these defaults.

Over the full term, the total paid is 3,913.23 dollars times 60 months, which is 234,793.78 dollars. The interest is 234,793.78 dollars minus the 200,000 dollar loan, which is 34,793.78 dollars. These totals use the unrounded EMI, as the calculator does, so multiplying the rounded EMI by 60 may differ by a dollar or two.

Who this term suits for a startup founder: a new startup borrowing to launch — for example, fitting out a first small office, buying laptops and basic equipment, and covering the first months of salaries and marketing until revenue starts coming in. A short 5-year term keeps total interest low, but the monthly payment is the highest in this group, so the startup must already have, or soon reach, steady monthly income.

FAQs

What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.

Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Can a new startup afford a 3,913.23 dollar EMI?
Only if monthly revenue comfortably covers 3,913.23 dollars plus rent, salaries and running costs. If early sales are uncertain, a smaller loan or a longer term is safer than missing payments in the first year.

Why is total interest only 34,793.78 dollars over 5 years?
Because the loan is repaid quickly: 60 payments of 3,913.23 dollars total 234,793.78 dollars, so interest is 234,793.78 minus 200,000, which is 34,793.78 dollars. Short terms always cost less interest in total.

What if the startup repays early, after 3 years?
Early repayment cuts interest because fewer monthly interest charges are added, but check for any early-repayment fee first. The page figures assume all 60 payments are made as scheduled.
