Startup Loan EMI Calculator (25 Years)

Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This startup version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly payment is the fixed amount you pay every month for 25 years, and the Total paid is everything you will have paid by the end of the loan, including both the amount borrowed and the interest.

Formula

EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.

How it works

This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.

Worked example

Loan amount 200,000 dollars, annual interest rate 6.5 percent, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 6.5 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5417 percent a month, and the number of payments is 25 times 12, which is 300 months. Using the page formula, the monthly EMI is 1,350.41 dollars. That is the calculator output for these defaults.

Over the full term, the total paid is 1,350.41 dollars times 300 months, which is 405,124.30 dollars. The interest is 405,124.30 dollars minus the 200,000 dollar loan, which is 205,124.30 dollars. These totals use the unrounded EMI, as the calculator does, so multiplying the rounded EMI by 300 may differ by a dollar or two.

Who this term suits for a startup founder: a mature startup taking a long premises mortgage, for example buying the building its workshop or office has rented for years. The monthly payment is comfortable, but total interest of 205,124.30 dollars now exceeds the 200,000 dollars borrowed — the loan costs more in interest than in principal.

FAQs

What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.

Is this startup calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why does interest exceed the loan itself over 25 years?
Because 300 payments of 1,350.41 dollars total 405,124.30 dollars, so interest is 405,124.30 minus 200,000, which is 205,124.30 dollars. After about 20 years the interest alone passes the amount borrowed.

Should a startup ever take a 25-year loan?
For premises it will occupy for the whole 25 years, possibly. For stock, equipment or working capital, no — those should be paid off long before 25 years, or the business pays interest for decades on things already used up.

What is the biggest risk of a 25-year startup loan?
Change: markets, rents, technology and the team itself will change many times in 25 years, while the EMI of 1,350.41 dollars stays fixed. The business must survive every downturn in between.
