Sourdough Starter Feeding Calculator

A 1:1:1 feeding gives equal weights of starter, flour and water — the simplest routine for keeping a starter healthy.

—

This result tells you how much flour and water to add at this feeding, and the total weight in the jar after feeding.

Formula

Flour = starter weight. Water = starter weight. Total = starter x 3.

How it works

Feeding means discarding most of the starter, then adding fresh flour and water in equal weight. The discarded portion can go into pancakes or crackers.

A starter kept at room temperature needs daily feeding; one in the fridge can go a week between feeds. Warmth speeds fermentation, cold slows it.

FAQs

What does 1:1:1 mean?
Equal weights of starter, flour and water — for example 50 g of each.

Must I discard starter every time?
If you never discard, the jar overflows and the starter gets too acidic. Discarding keeps it balanced.

Can I use wholemeal flour?
Yes. Wholemeal adds flavour and nutrients the yeast and bacteria enjoy, though it can ferment a little faster.
