Shop Retirement Corpus Calculator (20 Years)
Estimate a retirement corpus from monthly savings. This shop version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Future value result is the total retirement fund built up after 20 years of monthly savings plus interest. Over this longer term, interest adds a large share of the total, so keeping the monthly saving steady matters more than any single payment.
Formula
Corpus uses the monthly rate and number of monthly savings to grow each saving with interest.
How it works
Starting earlier matters more than saving a little more later, because interest has longer to compound.
Worked example
Monthly saving $500, annual rate 7 percent, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 7 percent divided by 12, which is about 0.5833 percent a month, and the number of savings is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the future value is $500 times one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, divided by the monthly rate, which gives $260,463.33. That is the calculator output for these defaults. The shop owner pays in $120,000 in total, so $140,463.33 of the corpus is interest.
Who this term suits for a shop owner: a shop owner with about 20 working years left, for example funding retirement from regular takings while the shop is still growing, so the corpus does not depend on one final sale price.
FAQs
When should I start saving for retirement?
As early as possible. Time in the market allows compounding to do more of the work.
Is this shop calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does interest pass $100,000 over 20 years?
Because 240 monthly savings at 7 percent give compounding two decades to work. Interest of $140,463.33 is larger than the $120,000 paid in, which is exactly why starting early matters more than saving more later.
Does a 20-year shop plan survive moving to different premises?
The saving plan itself does, because it is separate from the premises. What changes is the shop's takings, so the $500 saving should be re-checked after any move, not assumed to continue unchanged.
Is 7 percent a safe return to assume for 20 years?
It is an assumption, not a promise. Over 20 years real returns will rise and fall, and fees and taxes are not counted here, so the $260,463.33 figure is a planning estimate only.
