Shop Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (5 Years)
Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This shop version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.
The monthly interest figure is the cost of carrying the balance for one month at the entered rate, not a payment that clears the debt, so paying only this amount leaves the balance unchanged and paying more than this amount is what reduces what is owed.
Formula
Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.
How it works
Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.
Worked example
Balance $5,000, annual rate 18%, term 5 years. Using the page formula, monthly interest equals $5,000 times 18 divided by 100 divided by 12, which is $75.00 a month. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults, and it is the same on every page in this group because the term is not an input: only the balance and the rate decide the answer.
If only the $75.00 of interest is paid every month for 5 years, the total interest paid over 60 months is $4,500, and the $5,000 balance is still owed at the end, because interest-only payments never reduce the balance. That total is an illustration only, not a second output of this page: it assumes the rate stays at 18% and no new spending is added to the card.
Who this term suits for a shop owner: a shop owner covering a short, urgent cost, such as emergency stock, a broken till, or a small refit, where the card must be cleared from shop takings before the stock sells out or the fitting wears out.
FAQs
Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.
Is this shop calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
If I pay only $75 a month for 5 years, is the card cleared?
No. Paying only interest leaves the $5,000 balance unchanged, so after 5 years you will have paid $4,500 in interest and still owe $5,000. Paying more than $75 a month is what reduces the balance.
What shop cost makes a 5-year card plan worth it?
A short, urgent shop cost that can be repaid quickly, such as emergency stock, a broken till, or a small refit, where the card is cleared from shop takings well before 5 years are up.
How much above $75 a month starts to clear $5,000 in 5 years?
Any amount above $75 a month reduces the balance. For example, paying $175 a month puts $100 a month toward the balance, which clears $5,000 of principal in 50 months before interest is counted, though interest in real life stretches that time.
