Scientific Notation Calculator

Convert an ordinary number into scientific notation, a number between 1 and 10 times a power of ten.

—

The result rewrites the number entered in scientific notation, so a large or small number is easier to read and compare.

Formula

Scientific notation writes a number as a mantissa between 1 and 10, multiplied by 10 raised to an exponent.

How it works

Enter any non-zero number. The calculator shifts the decimal point until one digit sits before it, and counts the shifts as the exponent.

Worked example

For example, 12300 becomes 1.2300 x 10^4, because the decimal point moves 4 places to give 1.23, and 1.23 times 10 to the power 4 equals 12300.
