Return on Investment Calculator
Measure ROI as a percentage and a multiple from gain and cost.
This percentage shows the return earned relative to the cost, and the gain is the amount earned above that cost.
Formula
ROI equals gain minus cost, divided by cost, times 100.
How it works
ROI is a quick comparison tool, not a complete investment judgement — it ignores time, risk, and cash-flow timing. A 50% ROI over one year is very different from 50% over ten years.
Worked example
For example, ($15000 − $10000) ÷ $10000 × 100 = 50.00%, with a gain of $5000.00.
FAQs
What is a good ROI?
It depends on risk and time — compare similar investments over the same period.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes, if the gain is less than the cost, the result is negative.
Does ROI include time?
No — for time-adjusted returns, look at annualised return.
Are these figures financial advice?
No — they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
