Retirement Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (25 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This retirement version uses a 25-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month over 25 years, with interest assumed at the entered rate, so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the term.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 25 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 25 times 12, which is 300 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 300, minus one, which gives $83.96 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. On an unrounded basis, total deposits over 300 months are $25,188.51, so growth adds $50,000 minus $25,188.51, which is $24,811.49, toward the goal. Without interest, the same goal would need $50,000 divided by 300, which is $166.67 a month, so interest saves about $82.70 a month on an unrounded basis.

Who this term suits for a retirement saver: A saver with a long horizon before retirement, for example someone in their thirties who starts early so that a smaller monthly amount still reaches the goal, leaving room in the budget for a mortgage and family costs.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this retirement calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is $83.96 a month really enough for a $50,000 retirement goal?
Over 25 years, yes on these assumptions: 300 deposits total $25,188.51 and growth adds $24,811.49, almost half the goal. The catch is that every deposit must be made and the 5% rate must hold on average.

What is the biggest risk in a 25-year retirement savings plan?
Stopping early or letting the goal drift: a $50,000 pot set today may not match retirement costs in 25 years, and a decade of missed deposits cannot be replaced by a few larger ones at the end.

Should the deposit rise with pay over 25 years?
Yes, raising it as pay rises is the simplest protection: it guards against rising retirement costs and against years when returns fall short, without changing the habit itself.
