Retirement Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (20 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This retirement version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month over 20 years, with interest assumed at the entered rate, so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the term.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 20 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 20 times 12, which is 240 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 240, minus one, which gives $121.64 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. On an unrounded basis, total deposits over 240 months are $29,194.69, so growth adds $50,000 minus $29,194.69, which is $20,805.31, toward the goal. Without interest, the same goal would need $50,000 divided by 240, which is $208.33 a month, so interest saves about $86.69 a month on an unrounded basis.
Who this term suits for a retirement saver: A worker with about twenty years left before retirement, for example someone in their forties who starts a regular retirement habit now so that interest has time to do a large share of the work.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this retirement calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How can $121.64 a month reach $50,000 in 20 years?
Through twenty years of compounding: 240 deposits total $29,194.69 and growth adds $20,805.31, so interest provides more than 40% of the goal. Without interest you would need $208.33 a month.
Does a 20-year retirement plan survive changing jobs?
It can, if the habit survives the move: the plan only needs the deposit to continue, whatever the employer. A gap between jobs is the real risk, so restart the deposit as soon as pay resumes.
Is 5% a safe return to assume for 20 years?
It is an assumption, not a promise: real returns vary year to year and may average lower. If the average falls below 5%, the same $121.64 deposit will leave the pot short of $50,000.
