Retirement Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (15 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This retirement version uses a 15-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to set aside every month over 15 years, with interest assumed at the entered rate, so that the deposits plus growth reach the goal amount by the end of the term.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 15 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 15 times 12, which is 180 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 180, minus one, which gives $187.06 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. On an unrounded basis, total deposits over 180 months are $33,671.43, so growth adds $50,000 minus $33,671.43, which is $16,328.57, toward the goal. Without interest, the same goal would need $50,000 divided by 180, which is $277.78 a month, so interest saves about $90.71 a month on an unrounded basis.
Who this term suits for a retirement saver: A mid-career saver planning retirement income over the next fifteen years, for example someone who wants a steady monthly habit that grows into a useful pot by retirement, rather than a last-minute scramble.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this retirement calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why is the 15-year deposit only $187.06 a month?
Because fifteen years of compounding does much of the work: total deposits are $33,671.43 and growth adds $16,328.57, nearly a third of the goal. That is the reward for starting fifteen years before retirement.
Is a 15-year retirement plan too long to trust?
Not if it is reviewed: the maths holds only if the 5% rate is earned on average and every deposit is made. Review the pot every few years and adjust the deposit if pay, tax rules, or retirement plans change.
What happens if I pause deposits when income drops?
Pausing breaks the plan: fewer deposits mean less compounding, and the pot will fall short of $50,000 unless later deposits rise. A short pause is recoverable; a long one needs a new, higher monthly figure.
