Pet Travel Carrier Size Calculator

Work out a minimum travel carrier size from a pet's length and height.

—

This result is the minimum carrier size to look for, so the pet has room to stand, turn and lie down.

Formula

Carrier length is pet length plus about 10 cm; carrier height is pet height plus about 10 cm.

How it works

Extra room lets the pet stand, turn and lie down, which airlines and welfare guides require. Measure standing height including ears where relevant, and check your carrier or airline's exact rules before travel.

Worked example

For example, a pet 60 cm long and 45 cm high needs a carrier about 70 cm long and about 55 cm high (60 + 10 = 70 and 45 + 10 = 55).

FAQs

Should I buy much bigger?
No. Too much room lets the pet slide around in transit.

Do airlines use these numbers?
Airlines have their own rules; this is a general sizing guide.

How do I help my pet accept it?
Leave it open at home with bedding and treats well before travel.
