Personal Loan EMI Calculator (5 Years)
Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This personal version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly payment is the fixed amount paid every month for 5 years, and the Total paid is the sum of all those monthly payments over the full term, so it is higher than the original loan amount whenever interest is charged.
Formula
EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.
How it works
This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 5 years. First, the monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and the number of payments is 5 times 12, which is 60. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $3,913.23. Over 60 payments the total paid is $234,793.78, calculated from the unrounded EMI exactly as the calculator does. Total interest is $234,793.78 minus $200,000, which is $34,793.78. That is 17.4% of the amount borrowed.
Who this term suits for a person: A 5-year term suits a person with a steady salary who wants the debt cleared fast, for example someone paying for essential home repairs, or consolidating credit-card debt before a house move. The trade-off is clear: the monthly payment is high, but the interest bill stays small, and the household budget must still cover slow months and unexpected bills.
FAQs
What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.
Is this personal calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is a 5-year personal loan too short for a $200,000 loan?
It can be, if $3,913.23 a month strains the household budget in a slow month. Test the payment against the lowest recent monthly take-home pay, not the best month, and keep an emergency buffer. If it does not fit, a longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest.
How much does a person save by choosing 5 years instead of 10 years?
On $200,000 at 6.5%, a 5-year loan costs $34,793.78 in interest and a 10-year loan costs $72,515.15, so the 5-year term saves $37,721.37. That saving is the reward for the higher monthly payment, and it frees household income sooner for saving or other plans.
Can I repay a 5-year personal loan early?
That depends on the lender, because some personal loans charge a prepayment fee. This calculator assumes no fees and a fixed 6.5% rate, so ask the lender about early-repayment terms and any fees before signing.
