Personal Loan EMI Calculator (30 Years)

Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This personal version uses a 30-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The Monthly payment is the fixed amount paid every month for 30 years, and the Total paid is the sum of all those monthly payments over the full term, so it is higher than the original loan amount whenever interest is charged.

Formula

EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.

How it works

This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.

Worked example

Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 30 years. First, the monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and the number of payments is 30 times 12, which is 360. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $1,264.14. Over 360 payments the total paid is $455,088.98, calculated from the unrounded EMI exactly as the calculator does. Total interest is $455,088.98 minus $200,000, which is $255,088.98. That is 127.5% of the amount borrowed.

Who this term suits for a person: A 30-year term is not normal for a personal loan; it is a mortgage-length term applied to personal borrowing. Its only honest use is to show the cost of stretching: the payment of $1,264.14 looks manageable, but the interest bill of $255,088.98 is more than the amount borrowed, and the debt would run for most of a working life.

FAQs

What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.

Is this personal calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Is a 30-year term normal for a personal loan?
No. Most personal loans run for a few years, not 30. A 30-year term is normal for a mortgage on a house, not for unsecured personal borrowing, and a lender offering it for a personal loan should be checked carefully, including fees and security.

How can the $255,088.98 interest bill be cut?
By paying more each month, making extra payments when possible, choosing a shorter term, borrowing a smaller amount, or finding a lower rate. Even a small extra payment each month, kept up for years, can cut the total interest sharply.

What is a person trading when they choose 30 years over 5 years?
A lower payment, $1,264.14 instead of $3,913.23, in exchange for $220,295.20 of extra interest, because $255,088.98 minus $34,793.78 is $220,295.20. The monthly saving is real, but the lifetime cost is far higher.
