Personal Loan EMI Calculator (20 Years)
Estimate the monthly EMI for a loan from amount, rate and term. This personal version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.
The Monthly payment result of $1,491.15 is the fixed amount due every month for 240 payments, and the Total paid result of $357,875.11 is the full amount paid over the whole term, so the lower monthly figure comes with a much larger total amount paid over 20 years.
Formula
EMI equals principal times monthly rate times one plus monthly rate to the power of payments, divided by that power minus one.
How it works
This assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments with no extra fees.
Worked example
Loan amount $200,000, annual rate 6.5%, term 20 years. First, the monthly rate is 6.5% divided by 12, which is 0.0054167, and the number of payments is 20 times 12, which is 240. Using the EMI formula, the monthly payment is $1,491.15. Over 240 payments the total paid is $357,875.11, calculated from the unrounded EMI exactly as the calculator does. Total interest is $357,875.11 minus $200,000, which is $157,875.11. That is 78.9% of the amount borrowed.
Who this term suits for a person: A 20-year term is a long commitment for a personal loan, and it only suits a person with a very stable, long-term plan, for example someone funding a home upgrade in a house they intend to live in for decades. The payment of $1,491.15 is lower, but the household must be able to keep paying through job changes, family changes, and slow years.
FAQs
What is an EMI?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal over the loan term.
Is this personal calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Why does the monthly payment fall so little after 20 years?
The payment falls from $1,742.21 at 15 years to $1,491.15 at 20 years, only $251.06 less, because at long terms most of each payment still goes to interest. Stretching the term further buys smaller and smaller payment cuts while adding large amounts of interest.
Is a 20-year term suitable for a person with irregular income?
It is risky. The $1,491.15 payment continues through gaps in income, and missing payments can add fees and damage a credit record. A person with irregular income should keep a larger cash buffer, or choose a shorter term with a clear plan to overpay in good months.
What happens if I miss payments on a 20-year personal loan?
The lender may charge late fees, the missed amount can be added to the balance so future interest rises, and the credit record can be affected. Over 20 years, even a short spell of missed payments can add a large amount to the total cost.
