Personal Credit Card Monthly Interest Calculator (10 Years)

Estimate monthly interest on a card balance. This personal version uses a 10-year planning term as its starting point.

—

The "Monthly interest" figure is the amount charged in interest for one month on the balance you entered, before any part of the balance itself is repaid, so paying only that amount leaves the balance unchanged.

Formula

Monthly interest equals balance times annual rate divided by 100 divided by 12.

How it works

Paying only interest leaves the balance unchanged. Paying more than interest reduces the balance.

Worked example

Balance $5,000.00, annual rate 18%, term 10 years. First, the monthly interest is $5,000.00 times 18 divided by 100 divided by 12, which is $900.00 divided by 12, which is $75.00. Over 120 months, paying only interest costs $75.00 times 120, which is $9,000.00. That is 180.0% of the balance. If only interest is paid, the balance at the end is still $5,000.00, because no part of the $75.00 payment repays the balance itself.

Who this term suits for a person: A 10-year term suits a person checking a balance that has already lasted far too long, for example someone who has carried a card balance since early working life and now wants to see what a whole decade of interest-only payments really costs. Ten years is not a normal card plan, it is a warning that the balance has never been tackled, and the $9,000.00 interest bill shows why.

FAQs

Why is card interest high?
Card rates are usually higher than loan rates, so balances grow quickly if only minimum payments are made.

Is this personal calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is 10 years of interest $9,000.00, almost double the balance?
Because $75.00 a month for 120 months is $9,000.00, which is 180.0% of the $5,000.00 balance. The balance is still $5,000.00 at the end, so the person has paid nearly twice the borrowed amount in interest alone and still owes the original sum.

Is a card balance meant to last 10 years?
No. Cards are for short-term borrowing, and their rates are usually higher than loan rates. A balance that lasts 10 years usually means only interest or minimum payments have been made. That pattern is exactly what makes the total interest grow larger than the balance itself.

What happens if my rate rises above 18% during those 10 years?
The monthly interest rises with the rate. At 24%, the monthly interest on $5,000.00 is $5,000.00 times 24 divided by 100 divided by 12, which is $100.00. Over 120 months that would be $12,000.00 of interest, instead of $9,000.00, and the balance would still be $5,000.00.
