Personal Break Even Units Calculator (5 Years)
Find how many units must be sold to break even. This personal version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.
The Break even units figure is the number of units you must sell to exactly cover your costs: at that number, total revenue equals total costs, so you make neither a profit nor a loss. Selling fewer units leaves you short of covering costs, while every unit sold beyond that number adds to profit.
Formula
Break even units equal fixed costs divided by price minus variable cost per unit.
How it works
At break even, total revenue exactly covers total costs, with no profit and no loss.
Worked example
Fixed costs $10,000, price per unit $50, variable cost per unit $30, term 5 years. First, the contribution per unit is $50 minus $30, which is $20. Break even units are $10,000 divided by $20, which is 500 units. At 500 units, revenue is 500 times $50, which is $25,000, variable costs are 500 times $30, which is $15,000, and total costs are $15,000 plus $10,000, which is $25,000, so revenue exactly covers costs. As a planning pace only, not as an output of this calculator, reaching 500 units over 5 years means 100 a year, which is 8.33 a month. Selling 100 units more, 600 units in total, gives revenue of $30,000 against total costs of $28,000, so the profit is $2,000, because each extra unit adds $20.
Who this term suits for a person: A 5-year term suits a person starting a small side hustle who wants to clear the fixed costs quickly, for example someone selling handmade crafts at weekend markets, home-baked goods, or printed T-shirts. The pace is 100 units a year, so a slow start matters: if sales stall in the first year, the remaining years must make up the gap, and the fixed costs, such as equipment, a stall fee, or packaging, are already spent.
FAQs
What is break even?
Break even is the point where revenue covers all costs, so profit is zero.
Is this personal calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
Is 500 units a lot to sell in 5 years for a personal side hustle?
It depends on the product and the sales channel. At 100 units a year, which is 8.33 a month, a weekend market seller or an online seller with a small audience can reach it, but a seller who only sells to friends and family will struggle. Test the pace against real sales in the first few months, not against hope, and lower the fixed costs first if the pace looks too high.
What happens if I sell fewer than 500 units in 5 years?
You stay below break even. Selling 400 units gives revenue of $20,000 against total costs of $22,000, which is fixed costs of $10,000 plus variable costs of $12,000, so the loss is $2,000. Selling 600 units gives revenue of $30,000 against total costs of $28,000, so the profit is $2,000. Every unit above 500 adds $20, and every unit below 500 loses $20.
Should I cut the price to sell faster over 5 years?
Cutting the price also cuts the $20 contribution per unit, so it raises the break-even number. At a price of $40 with variable costs still $30, the contribution falls to $10 and break even rises to 1,000 units. Over a short 5-year term, that higher target is usually harder, so check the new break-even figure before discounting.
