Oven Temperature Converter Calculator

Enter a temperature in one scale and see the matching value in the other two, including the traditional gas mark used in older ovens.

—

This result gives the same oven temperature in all three scales, so you can set your oven to the matching value on any dial.

Formula

Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) x 5/9. Gas mark is roughly (Fahrenheit − 250) / 25.

How it works

Fahrenheit and Celsius are linked by a fixed formula, so conversion is exact. Gas marks are older oven dial settings, so their equivalents are approximate.

If your oven runs hot or cold, an inexpensive oven thermometer tells you the truth faster than any conversion chart.

Worked example

For example, 350 °F gives 177 °C and gas mark 4.0: (350 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 176.67, rounded to 177 °C, and (350 − 250) ÷ 25 = 4.0.

FAQs

What is gas mark 4 in Celsius?
About 180 °C, which is 350 °F — a common temperature for cakes and roasting.

Why do some recipes only give gas marks?
Older British cookbooks were written for gas ovens, whose dials were numbered instead of showing degrees.

Is the gas mark conversion exact?
No, it is an approximation. Different sources round slightly differently, so use the nearest whole gas mark.
