Medical Present Value Calculator (20 Years)

Find how much a future amount is worth today. This medical version uses a 20-year planning term as its starting point.

—

In plain terms, the Present value result is the amount to set aside today so that, growing at the annual rate you entered, it reaches the future medical amount by the end of the 20-year term; a smaller present value means time and interest are doing more of the work, while a larger one means less help from interest over this term.

Formula

Present value equals future amount divided by one plus rate to the power of years.

How it works

A future amount is worth less today because money today can earn interest.

Worked example

Future amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 20 years. Using the page formula, present value equals $50,000 divided by 1.05 to the power of 20, which is $18,844.47. That is the calculator's own result for these defaults. The discount is $50,000 minus $18,844.47, which is $31,155.53, so time and interest remove $31,155.53 of value between today and year 20.

In plain terms, a medical cost of $50,000 due in 20 years is worth $18,844.47 today at 5%. Setting aside $18,844.47 now, growing at 5% a year, would reach $50,000 when the cost falls due, before fees and taxes. Note this is not simply $50,000 minus 20 times 5%: discounting compounds, which is why the figure is $18,844.47 and not $0.

Who this term suits for a medical household: a household building a retirement health fund, for example a couple in their forties setting aside money now for care costs they expect in about 20 years, where two decades of growth cut the amount needed today to under $19,000.

FAQs

What is present value?
Present value is what a future sum is worth today after allowing for interest over time.

Is this medical calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Why is $50,000 in 20 years worth less than $19,000 today?
Because 1.05 to the power of 20 is 2.6533, so $50,000 divided by 2.6533 is $18,844.47. Twenty years of 5% growth more than doubles the money set aside.

Should a 20-year medical plan be judged on present value or future value?
Both: the future value tells you what the care will cost then, and the present value tells you what to set aside now. Use the present value to decide how much to save today.

What happens to this figure if rates rise to 7%?
It falls further, because a higher rate discounts more heavily: at 7%, $50,000 in 20 years would be worth about $12,920 today. A lower rate would raise today's figure.

Estimates only, not financial advice. Figures are approximate and do not include all fees, taxes, or changing rates unless stated.
