Investment Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (5 Years)

Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This investment version uses a 5-year planning term as its starting point.

—

Interpretation: the Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to save every month for 5 years, or 60 monthly deposits, at the annual rate entered, so that those deposits plus assumed growth reach the goal amount; a lower real rate would leave the same monthly deposit short of the goal, and missing deposits would leave it shorter still.

Formula

Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.

How it works

Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.

Worked example

Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 5 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 5 times 12, which is 60 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 60, minus one, which gives $735.23 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the term the deposits total $44113.70, so growth covers $5886.30 of the $50,000 goal. Without any interest the same goal would need $833.33 a month, so interest saves about $98.10 a month on average at the assumed rate. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average return would leave the same deposit short of the goal.

Who this term suits for an investor: an investor building a near-term lump sum for a planned investment, such as a top-up for a first rental-property deposit, a stake in a small business, or a portfolio position due in about 5 years — the deposit is high because compounding has little time to help, so the amount must be protected even when markets dip.

FAQs

How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.

Is this investment calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.

Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.

Can an investor really afford $735.23 a month for 5 years?
Only if the household budget already covers it without borrowing: $735.23 a month for 60 months is $44,113.70 of deposits, so check rent, bills and everyday costs first, and do not fund it from a card.

Why does growth add only $5,886.30 over 5 years?
Because compounding needs time: at 5%, five years of deposits earn $5,886.30 of growth on $44,113.70 paid in, which is why short investment goals depend mostly on the deposits themselves.

What if the market return falls below 5% during the 5 years?
Then the same $735.23 a month falls short of $50,000, so either raise the deposit, extend the term, or accept a smaller goal — the calculator does not guarantee any return.
