Investment Savings Goal Monthly Deposit Calculator (35 Years)
Find the monthly deposit needed to reach a savings goal. This investment version uses a 35-year planning term as its starting point.
Interpretation: the Monthly deposit figure is the fixed amount to save every month for 35 years, or 420 monthly deposits, at the annual rate entered, so that those deposits plus assumed growth reach the goal amount; a lower real rate would leave the same monthly deposit short of the goal, and missing deposits would leave it shorter still.
Formula
Monthly deposit equals goal times monthly rate divided by one plus monthly rate to the power of months minus one.
How it works
Saving a fixed amount each month with interest reaches the goal faster than saving without interest.
Worked example
Goal amount $50,000, annual rate 5%, term 35 years. The monthly rate is 5% divided by 12, which is about 0.4167% a month, and the number of deposits is 35 times 12, which is 420 months. Using the page formula, the monthly deposit is $50,000 times the monthly rate, divided by one plus the monthly rate to the power of 420, minus one, which gives $44.01 a month. That is the calculator output for these defaults. Over the term the deposits total $18484.41, so growth covers $31515.59 of the $50,000 goal. Without any interest the same goal would need $119.05 a month, so interest saves about $75.04 a month on average at the assumed rate. The 5% rate is only the entered assumption; a lower real average return would leave the same deposit short of the goal.
Who this term suits for an investor: an investor starting young with a whole-career horizon, such as building a retirement fund from a first salary — the deposit is tiny, yet the plan is only useful if it is reviewed and raised as income grows, because a goal fixed today will not match prices in 35 years.
FAQs
How much should I save each month?
Divide the goal by the growth of regular deposits at the assumed rate to get the monthly amount.
Is this investment calculator exact?
No, it is an estimate for planning only, based on the numbers you enter.
Are these figures financial advice?
No, they are estimates for planning only, not financial advice. Check with a qualified adviser for decisions involving large sums.
How does $44.01 a month become $50,000 over 35 years?
Through 420 deposits totalling $18,484.41 plus $31,515.59 of growth at 5% — growth is nearly twice the deposits, which is why long horizons reward starting early.
Is a 35-year investment plan worth starting if the goal will change?
Yes, as a habit: the deposit habit matters more than the exact goal, and the target can be raised or redirected as life and markets change.
What happens to this plan if the investor switches strategy?
The deposits already made keep their value, but a new strategy changes future returns, so recalculate the monthly deposit under the new expected return.
